Studying Isn't the Goal

In one sense, we go to school to study. However, I think it's important to remember that studying in itself is not the goal. The goal of school is to learn and to be able to apply what you learn. Studying and engaging in assignments gives you the stepping stones and tools to get there.

If doing homework makes you feel like you're a hamster on a wheel, try looking at the bigger picture. Why are you at school? What are you hoping to achieve? What end goal are you aiming at, not only in your certificate or degree, but even for this month or this semester? Let the bigger picture guide and encourage you in the sometimes tedious day to day tasks. Gaining this perspective has given me a lot of freedom with my studies, and helped to empower me. Rather than being a slave to deadlines and grades, you can take your education into your own hands by seeing assignments as tools to reinforce what you are learning, and as vehicles that will eventually take you where you want to go in your education and life journey.

If you are stuck on studying, maybe take a few minutes to brainstorm. Make a mindmap on a piece of paper, or freewrite. What is your bigger reason for educate? Why are you here? What kinds of things are you getting out of your studies and education experience? What kinds of things are you able to do with the knowledge you have? What might you be able to do with the learning that you will gain? Dream a little. It helps to unlock my brain when I'm stressed.

Go forth!
